The history of the woman`s mother dying of cancer or any other cause of
premature death in childbirth or after having a baby is one of the known
triggers of PPD in the surviving daughter. This also applies if a woman`s
mother dies around the time of her own childbearing period.
For most women, pregnancy and birth is a cataclysm in terms of awareness of
the birth/death life cycle.
My own mother died of ovarian cancer when my first baby was 8 months old and
I was 4 months pregnant. I spent many years fighting the anxiety and fears
as well as guilt that I had been so busy with my own pregnancy and young
baby that I hadn`t been active enough in getting her to have medical tests
in time.
