I believe it is important to remember that when a baby sucks on a finger
they are sucking on a finger, not necessarily sucking as they would on
breast. Thus, what they do tells us very little about all that happens at
breast. To assume otherwise is to fool ourselves.

Do you act the same way when sucking a finger as when you obtain fluid from
a straw?  Yet both are sucking!  (but one suck does not another suck mimic)
