Re: the article I mentioned at medpage, in which Ruth Lawrence is quoted. I
have received written confirmation from the journalist, Neil Osterweil (I
misspelled his name in my earlier post) that he cites Lawrence from the
interview he conducted with her, and taped to ensure accuracy.
The following is from the article, which may be viewed if you go to
www.medpagetoday.com and do a site search for Prolacta.

"It isn't about commercialism; it's about getting people to invest in human
milk," says Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and
neonatology at the University of Rochester and director of the newborn
nursery at Strong Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y.

"The idea is that for the first time there's an opportunity to bring real
science and investigation into play to make more milk available for more
infants who could benefit by having human milk," Dr. Lawrence said in an
interview.

"I think the demand will increase with the availability, because the science
has been there for years, and many [neonatal intensive care] units just
don't have easy access to human milk, so unless the mother herself could
provide it, it's not been sought after. And that's one of the important
issues here, is making it universally available."

It is unclear why she feels this is the first time science will come into
play - due to a for-profit distribution system? What about the science that
enables us to provide virtually every baby with its own mother's milk,
expressed fresh and delivered direct? That possibility is dismissed in
passing, almost as though it were unlikely.
