I think that not age but development is the key to determining the right moment for the introduction of solids.
A child is ready for solids when he can sit upright (with a little help), can grab food pieces with his own hand and bring it to his mouth in a coordinated way, when he can chew on things put in his mouth instead of working it out of his mouth with his tongue. In most children this will be somewhere halfway his first year of life or in de second half year. Some ex-premies will have catched up by that time, others need some extra time. As do many healthy term born children.
