I have been searching the archives for several days for information on how
long to wait before supplementing a baby who is "breastfed." I know most of the
resources, have checked all the "major" references works we LCs rely, done a
search on PubMed, etc. The only reference I haven't checked is the Red Book
because I can't find one on the unit and the Medical Library was closed last
night when I was really getting into this! But I'll get it in the morning.
Just for background on what and why I am looking for this
information..........
Personally, I think it's ok to wait 12-24 BUT this opinion is not
generalized. It's based on many things and one of them is "has baby EVER had a decent
feed at breast?"(others are gestational age, type of delivery, birth weight, etc)
As an LC I know what to look for but when I started sharing the variables
with staff I got a lot of blank looks and then yestterday, a nasty note to
present at the next staff meeting because "staff is confused - no clear guidance
from LC on this topic - urgent matter." What they want is "how soon can I give
formula?" and what I want them to learn is "how to tell baby is latched well,
getting something, and what to do if not (like hand express and spoon feed
colostrum) which is what I would do but they "don't have time."
So if someone can help me out here I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
