Kristen: The nurse or doctors office who told your breastfeeding mom to
feed her baby pedialyte was wrong. Breastmilk is designed to protect a
baby's gut from the bacteria and viruses that cause vomitting and
diarrhea. It protects the baby's stomach from harmful bacteria, but allows
the good bacteria to grow. Breastmilk contains interferon which is a very
strong antiviral, lipase which kills bacteria in infants intestines, the
short chained fatty acids have antiinfective effects, oligosaccharides help
the good bacteria to grow and stops the bad bacteria from adhering to
tissue walls, lysozyme is bacteriocidal, not to mention the IgA, IgM, IgG,
IgD which help protect the infant from viruses/bacteria of the intestine.
Once again, breast milk is the answer...You'll have to let them know that
Pedialyte was invented for the poor formula fed baby who gets none of this
from his formula when he has vomitting or diarrhea. When my son had
vomitting at about a year or so I stopped all other foods and drinks,
nursed him exclusively for the rest of the day and by that night or the
next morning he was fine!
