In response to Joanne's question: Are there references on the gaze besides Winnicott? (Keren E-G, are you reading?)

Here are a few references that pertain to maternal/paternal infant interaction, inclusive of mutual gazing. Some use different terminology with the same concept in mind. Here are some that come to mind at this moment..

Stern (Daniel, some of his books are easy to read and are a great introduction to the "dance" between mothers and babies) Brazelton, Crockenberg, Emde, Lamb (for fathers) Zander-Malatesta, Zeanah.

Trad, Fraiberg, Mahler, Kaplan, Small (M)

Klein, Weininger (Otto), Winnicott or look for object relations theorists and babies yet, they might not use different words to describe interactions, but essentially they are talking about emotional interchanges between mothers and babies.

Ainsworth, Bowlby, Main, Water and attachment theory theorists. By the way Karen R. wrote a book on attachment theory very easy to read and understand.

I published a study (conducted in 1991)on maternal infant interaction that deals specificially to interaction (including terms such as reciprocity, mutual gaze etc) during breastfeeding :

Epstein K. (1993) The interactions between breastfeeding mothers and their babies during the breastfeeding session. Early Child Development and Care. 87:93-104.

(It is under Epstein, at that time I decided to not use the Gilboa part of my name)

Hope this answers your question!
