Has anyone else seen the Chantry article yet in the latest Pediatrics  
journal?

The authors looked at respiratory infection risk with various  
durations of "full" breastfeeding (other liquids or solids given less  
frequently than once per day), and found significant differences  
between 4-6 months of full breastfeeding and >= 6 months of full  
breastfeeding in US infants. Babies offered other substances at 4-6  
months suffered over 4 times the risk of pneumonia and around twice  
the risk of recurrent otitis media compared to those "fully"  
breastfed for six months or more. The results were controlled for all  
the usual sociodemographic variables including childcare and smoke  
exposure.

A shame they didn't examine truly exclusive breastfeeding, but  
nevertheless the results are quite striking! Abstract is here:
