Any OTs, PTs, SLPs on the list feel free to comment, but I have been told
by therapists I work with as well as my all-knowing OT doctoral student
daughter, that therapists must have a doctor's order in hand before
treating a client. Here at the hospital, our speech therapist works under
a standing order when we jointly see a mom/baby, but if said mom/baby were
to go to the clinic where she spends most of her time, mom must have a
doctor's order/prescription in hand. This is also the only way mom's
insurance will cover the cost of the visit. So, the LC may refer, the
mother may self-refer, but she will then have to self-pay, if she can get a
therapist to agree to see her without an order, which, according to my
sources is virtually impossible.
