Hi, My name is Nuala Murphy RN IBCLC. I am a hospital based LC in Dallas TX. I
have worked with a Mother this past week who originally called me with
possible mastitis. Her OB had just put her on Dicloxacillin x2 days, Hard area
upper quadrant of left breast, very painful,no fever, some flu like symptoms a
few days earlier. No relief of hardness or pain. We discussed various nursing
positions etc, Mom had read up on things to try. I recommended she call OB by
next day if no improvement. The next thing I knew she was admitted to the
Hospital feeling much sicker, low grade fever, swollen breast. Started on
Vancomycin IV, No change in symptoms. As it turns out she has implants and a
sonogram showed fluid around the implant. Friday night she had implant removed
and two drains inserted underneath side of breast either side of incision.
Both her Surgeon and OB did not want her to nurse for few days. Her breast has
been engorged and somewhat uncomfortable. Baby who is 5 weeks old stayed in
her room with her and nursed both breasts before surgery and nursed right side
only after surgery. Finally today we got the ok to start pumping. I assisted
her and she get 1oz and her breast felt much better after. I urged her to talk
to her OB about putting baby to breast immediately. They got 75cc of pus from
around implant. Mom is recovering and I am hopeful she will return to full
nursing. I would like to ask if any of you have seen infected
implants. Ob and Surgeon are saying bacteria came from baby through nipple.
Implants are saline, Silicone implants removed 2yrs ago. Baby is doing great,
very happy baby. I would love to hear your comments. Sorry for long message
Nuala Murphy
