Perhaps mom does not have a problem, perhaps the baby is purposely not
stimulating an MER on that one side.  Wolf and Glass cite a case of
hemi-tracheomalacia where the baby fussed when placed to breastfeed on
the side on which trachea was soft - he could not breathe in that
position.  Other possibilities are torticollis, ear infections, or even
flow differences between the breast.
It is not unusual for babies to do their best initially, and as they get
older and wiser, to start to complain about uncomfortable feeding.  I
recommend evaluating this dyad again.
