Becky,
I've seen similar situations to this mom and it's so frustrating. It seems
like the woman is doing all the right things. Micheal Woolridge gave a great
lecture on insufficient milk syndrome at the ILCA conference... did you
attend? He described the observations they have seen at his clinic. It
seems that there is a variation on supply in women and said a woman could be
a t the lower end of the bell curve (in regards to supply) apparently these
women who appear to be low producers can gradually increase (but slowly) the
amount they produce over, I believe he said 6 weeks..fill me in guys if I'm
wrong. I would encourage this mom to continue as she is doing, investigate
SNS at the breast for supplement and keep nursing. I personally saw a mom
who was unable to produce an adequate amount for baby but she has continued
to "comfort" nurse for 6 months at his point because both mom and baby still
love it. I believe these women can still be successful, but I think we need
to help them redefine their meaning of success.
