I had the same reaction when I attended the excellent ILCA preconference
session in 2001 about BF'g the baby with orofacial anomalies.  The OTs and
RDs all talked glowingly about "pigeon feeders."   I imagined myself having
to walk into a pet supply store, asking where the bird supplies are ....

I was told "Pigeon" is a well-known baby products co. in Japan.  Something
like Gerber in the USA.  They make a bottle nipple for use by cleft palate
babies.  Its distinctive feature is that babies can get milk out of the
bottle simple by compressing on the teat -- they don't have to *also* "suck
in," a skill which is often impossible when babies have clefts that do not
permit a proper seal.

Also, the Pigeon feeders look like a "regular" bottle and nipple -- unlike
the Haberman, where the teat stands up and away from the bottle on a
pedestal, if you will.  The docs and nurses report that the families value
having this feeding device: not only because it works, and is inexpensive,
but because its appearance does not draw attention to itself.
