Dear Judy,
Sorry for the delay in writing. I'm trying to catch up on several
days of e-mails.
You wrote: Mom is taking only prenatals and stool
softener.

Over the years, I have worked with several moms who have been taking a
stool softener that was not supposed to have had any effect on the babies.
In each of these cases, the babies had brown stools (still runny, but the
wrong color for breastfed stools), babies were fussy and babies had trouble
gaining weight. When mom stopped the stool softener, babies' stools became
the right color, and babies got calm and started gaining. If the stool
softener can cause diarrhea-like stools in the baby, I should think it would
be quite possible for the stool softener your mother is taking to cause
vomiting.
If mom hasn't already stopped taking the stool softener, you might
suggest that she do so and try switching to some type of bulk fiber
supplement or higher-fiber foods.
