Here is New Zealand it is simply "breastfeeding". Nursing is a
profession you go into or something that happens to sick people.

Some people may still use the very English phrase "are you feeding the
baby yourself". This would mostly be from the older generation.

A slang version may be "is the baby on the tit?" - and this would not
be considered rude. Kai is the Maori word for food and some may say to
the baby/child "would you like a kai?".

Mostly women would say " I need to feed the baby", and everyone would
know what that means. Or on the phone you may say "I'm feeding right
now, can I get back to you". And once again, everyone would understand
this means breastfeeding the baby and not feeding yourself, or the fish,
or the cat, or whatever!

My work title is Breastfeeding Services Co Ordinator. That is
understood much more than "Lactation Consultant". There is no
discomfort in using the word breastfeeding (at least not for most).

We have just had a very successful World Breastfeeding Week here so I
am feeling quite optimistic about breastfeeding right now. Let's hope
my bubble is not burst tomorrow!
