In a message dated 98-04-28 19:08:21 EDT, you write:

<< I received a very supportive email a while back from one of our list moms,
pointing out that the difference between an LLLL and an LC consisted of
levels
 of knowledge.>>

I agree--my point is, I am not concerned about the existence of *more*
lactation support; rather, I am concerned about the limiting (in mom's eyes)
of *legitimate* support. It was this comment (in the original post) that made
me anxious:
<<After this happens, I would like to see the title LC protected...>>
Of course, I am not for limiting IBCLC status...which is just what some moms
in some situations need.

<< there are two elements pertaining to Leadership that i think
point towards the need for professional LCs. one is that there seems to be a
certain resistance within LLL to Leaders using knowledge outside the strict
parameters of LLL material. this may not be true of other regions, i only
know
what the story is here, but that is my impression. >>

I personally haven't expereinced this, though as you said this may differ in
different places. As a student of anthropology and a researcher in the field
of lactation, I find that I bring a varied "paradigm" to the LLL meetings I
lead or attend. I rarely bring up "LLL" material; instead, I talk about the
AAP, WHO, and UNICEF, and give synopses from various medical journals rather
than settling for the "pre-digested" versions available.

I enjoy your posts very much, incidentally. Keep up the good work.

<< i must say, i would send
anyone to Joy for anything with the greatest confidence!>>

pooh pooh. Thanks, though, for the sweet comment.

Joy
