Hi Lisa,
I don't actually know what demulen-135 is - but it should be no problem. the
morning after pill (or better known as emergency contraception) is usually 2
high dose pills and then another 2 pills 12 hours later. Or large doses of
progesterone can be taken in the same way.
Even if oestrogen -containing pills are used, it is no big problem, b/c it
is only in the woman's system for 24 hours or so. Usually her supply is not
affected, but if it is then she should be able to feed more over a couple of
days to increase it again. The amount of hormones getting through to the
baby in the milk is very small, and certainly not enough to "pump and dump".
(Don't forget, women keep feeding when pregnant and their circulating
hormones would be high for much longer periods of time).
It still amazes me how many medication questions come up on lactnet. Why do
doctors think drugs are so harmful?
I was giving a statistics-type talk today and managed to turn the discussion
to smoking and breastfeeding. And again the same question - is it safe for
the baby to breastfeed if the mother smokes? No understanding that the
alternative is not risk free.
ARRRGH!
