Re: I am still biting my tongue from yesterday...38 week old baby
C/Sectioned for macrosomia...For those of you who see women in cultures
where C Sections are routine, how do you do it every day?

Dear Pam,

Well, I became a midwife. And sadly, the pendulum has swung/is swinging
again. Just attended a terrific little rally for midwives in Austin, TX
(site of the recent MANA convention) where NO midwives are able to deliver
in hospitals anymore...and it is my job in lactation to undo most of the
efforts of the hospital environment, social environment, and goodness knows
what else, to confound the efforts of a vulnerable little baby to obtain
that which is essential to life...mom's breastmilk.

I can't remember who said it in a recent post, but I do agree that a back-
to-basics, groundswell movement is a good plan, (ala Ina May Gaskin a year
or two ago) If we want to impact breastfeeding, we have to impact birth
practices. To impact birth practices, we have to find the magic button
that somehow says to women that anesthetized life (and labor)(unless there
are bonafide medical indications)tends to rob us of the richness of
experience, and there are other choices available.

I don't know how to sell that. But I want to. (Can't wait to read Linda's
new book.) Coming back to Lactnet keeps me saying the same things you do,
Pam. And the things Winnie M. does. It lets me hope and keep at it,
because it's worth it.

Linda Duce RN, CNM Austin, TX
