You indicated the gifts you had received so far were "pretty innocuous" and
then mentioned the Ross "Sunshine Club".  Personally I wouldn't call that
innocuous!  This is a great way for a mom to get on Ross's mailing list
(with the baby's birth date) to receive lots of coupons and even samples
that appear to be timed to arrive to coincide with common "growth spurt"
ages.  The purpose of this "club" is at least 99 44/100% to get moms to buy
formula!  (I will grudgingly concede the 56/100 of a percent since there are
a few non-formula items included.  TIC)  One thing a new mom may fear is
isolation, especially if the majority of her previous social contacts
revolved around work or couple-only activities.  The idea of belonging to a
club for new moms, especially one that is free, may strike a responsive
chord for her.  Just another gimmick in the repertoire of the advertising
geniuses!
