I approach this by referring to Diane Wiessenger's suggestion that BF is
not "best", it is normal. That there are not benefits to BF, but
detriments from the use of something else.

I ask the class (or staffmember or client) to consider that
breastfeeding is the way human babies were meant to be fed. Therefore,
feeding infant formula causes 5-10 point lower IQ, 60% more illness even
in the USA, increased risk of diabetes, increased risk of breast cancer
and osteoporosis in the Mom, etc.

I comment that they except the fact that what they eat affects their own
health. If they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner at McDonalds, their
health would be different than if they ate a low-fat, balanced diet of
fresh foods with at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
"You are what you eat."

I feel that this helps make the point in terms they can accept. If I am
working with a mom who formula-fed her last child, or may need to
supplement with formula in the future, I have been honest with her, but
have not closed any doors.

(Putting on the flame-retardant suit, now.) Remember formula is not
poison. We need to educate about the risks, but in a way that keeps us
approachable.
