Subject: Norbask and Breastfeeding

Is Norbask(a calcium channel blocker--for hypertension)safe for mother
nursing a 12 hour old? Terri Shackelford, RN, IBCLC

The correct spelling is Norvasc, generic name is Amlodipine Besylate. It is an antihypertensive of the calcium channel blocker family. Dr. Tom Hale's book on Medications and Mother's Milk says that there is no data for this particular drug but that most of the calcium channel blockers readily transfer into milk. He advises to use extreme caution in the lactating woman. Observe the infant for hypertension, edema, headache or nausea. He also states in the section on nifedipine (another calcium channel blocker) that caution should be used but that some data suggests that nifedipine might be a better choice of the calcium channel blockers.

I would suggest possibly looking at INDERAL as an alternative for treating BP problems. It has been used and looked at much more in the lactation situation and would not be likely to involve any affect on the infant.
