I can tell you that you can get strep again and again and again because I had it so many times when I was in third grade that I was put on penicillin for an ENTIRE YEAR. If anything -- having Group A strep made me more susceptible. While it is possible that I had a drug resistant form, this was in the 1960s so I think it is more likely that my resistance was down from the first case. I can smell penicillin so well that I figured out one of the blinded "treatments" in a randomized controlled trial of potential medications for muscular dystrophy that were conducted on chickens merely by the smell. It fortunately never developed to scarlet fever, but my breast-fed Grandfather did have scarlet fever and as a consequence died of heart problems later. He was among the first to have a heart valve replaced with a pigs heart valve and he did live longer because of it.

This mom may not be immune and SHE should take precautions.

Best,
Susan
