Actually if you read the details of the AAP statements they recommend what is, by its 
proper definition, cosleeping.  They are confused about definitions.  What they are 
recommending against is cobedding, which is a subset of cosleeping.  The sloppiness of 
definitions has done and enormous disservice to parents.  Precise language and a truly 
comprehensive program for safer sleeping options such as what we have done for 
cigarettes or some of the better HIV programs would be likely to have a much better public 
health outcome.  NYCity did a very comprehensive program for smoking (including negative 
ads) that actually did have an impact on smoking rates.
