Harvey, do you happen to have those studies available? It would be a
good thing to read them interpret. If you have copies, I would love to
have one. I believe that Jack had a really hard time getting a hold of
these. I discussed this with him at one time, and he said that the
amounts of gentian violet consumed by the rodents in the study were so
great, especially in comparison to a limited course between a mother and
baby (3 days, once a day) that the results could not be compared or
extrapolated, but I do think that it would be worth reading the original
study to interpret from the actual data.

Subject: Gentian violet

I have read with some trepidation the discussion of using gentian violet
on nipples and in the mouths of babies. I used to recommend it until I
began hearing about studies of potential genotoxicity (chromosomal
damage) and carcinogenicity in laboratory animals. In 1995 NTP The
agency also nominated gentian violet for study by the NTP (the National
Toxicology Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences) after reviewing the available data and deciding that a
definitive conclusion regarding its carcinogenic activity could not be
reached.
