I have noticed that new mothers who don't know to offer the second breast think baby is done when s/he comes off the first. Often if they offer the second breast after burping and changing diaper baby will 'top off' the feed and settle nicely. No timed feeds, just watching baby and offering the second breast when baby indicates they are 'done' on the first breast.

My advice is always 'after s/he comes off the first side on his/her own, burp and change baby (diaper), then just offer the second side. If s/he wants it, s/he will take it, if not then s/he won't take it'

Sometimes I liken it to being offered dessert after a meal. If not offered we don't necessarily look for it but if it's offered we often take it and are quite satisfied and sleepy afterward. ;-)
