Dear Friends:
Paula Duppa-Miller is asking about stooling patterns.
While the huge majority of babies will poop regularly (at least one huge
and/or a smaller motion each time they feed), there are exceptions. I worked
with such an exception once: once this newborn cleared his meconium, he
pooped once a week. He went a very long time (nearly 2 weeks) between
clearing his meconium and having a nice big yellow. Thereafter he pooped once
a week, which was usually Thursdays! He gained, thrived, and was monitored
closely by me until this pattern became obvious.
What is significant in these cases of delayed stools is the quality of
the flatus. There is a powerful odor that makes the mother think that the
baby has stooled. She runs to check the diaper and there is nothing there.
These types of farts are indicators that the poop will come. And of course
the baby should be acting normally = smiling, peeing, waking up spontaneously
to eat and to look around.
     Warmly,
