Echoing Cathy Genna here, about looking at baby's oral anatomy.  If the
cracks are on the inferior aspect of the nipple, look at tongue.  If on the
superior aspect, look at upper lip.  People think you are some kind of
psychic if you look at their sores and then guess what it is the baby's been
doing, without having seen a feed, but it's surprising how often anatomy is
behind it.
I'm with Cathy on which bug it is likely to be, too.  Most of these cracks
are bacterially infected and they just don't heal well until they are
cleaned up AND any anatomical problems are dealt with, either by careful
attention to positioning or by frenotomy, of tongue and/or lip.
