As a pediatric intern in a NICU I once had a similar situation. A baby was born to a G2 mom and had a two chamber heart (thats right 2)
She came through the first surgery and on day2 or so post-op I suggested to mom that she start pumping as she had intended to BF. Some of the staff was a little leary of my suggestion but I figured it gave mom somethin gto do for this baby and mom did need to be prepared if the baby survived.
Unfortunately she didnt survive. The parents did have a third healthy child about 11/2 years later.
