Question of using St. John's Wort preparations on sore nipples:

Given risks associated with use of just about any topical concoction on
nipples (including possible delay of appropriate interventions), cannot see a
net benefit to use of these things on sore nipples. Risk of provoking
hypersensitivity response in the infant resulting from inadequate removal of
herbal/oil base leads my list of risks.

If we are concerned about the risks of very young infant ingesting anything
besides breastmilk ( formula, goat's milk, herbal teas, orange juice, etc.),
how can this thinking not include plant materials that we happen to call
herbs.

Lots of herbs are touted for their wound-healing properties, and probably for
good reason with some wound types, yet don't think any of them ought to be
used where very young babies can get them into their mouths.
