Has this lady's milk been cultured? Has the baby been cultured? (Maybe the
baby is the one harboring the strep.) What antibiotics has she been on?
I've been seeing an increase in mastitis in our practice that requires
admission for IV antibiotics. It was almost unheard of ten years ago. At
first I thought maybe our providers weren'g giving a full 10 - 14 days of
antibiotics but they are.

I've had a few women over the years who suffer from recurrent mastitis, and
had good results when they are put on prophylaxis for the whole time they
are lactating. See Ruth Lawrence's book for information. In the dairy
industry, mastitis is more common when certain minerals are deficient in
the diet. So, I'd recommend this patient make sure she's getting a good
vitamin mineral supplement, too.

Good luck. Let us know what you find out.
