It sounds like the comments by the grandma may have subtly influenced the
mom.  The power of suggestion is truly powerful.  I remember hearing a Hmong
woman speak on cultural aspects of breastfeeding.  She had been in the US
for a few years, was very well educated and knowledgeable and could
verbalize that many of the "old wives tales" in her culture had no
scientific basis.  One of these was the idea that if a pregnant woman
entered the house of a nursing mother, she would "steal" the milk-not
deliberately, but something that "just happened".  The speaker told how she
was nursing and a friend had visited.  Shortly thereafter, the friend
informed her that she had just learned she was pregnant.  Within a couple
days, the mom's milk was completely "gone" even though she knew very well
intellectually that there was no way the newly pg mom could literally
"steal" her milk, apparently the cultural beliefs were so firmly entrenched
that it did make a difference!
