Hello, All.
I think it is wonderfully admirable of both mothers and fathers to
want to keep life support going to provide breastmilk for a baby whose mother is
terminally ill (is that the correct terminology?). But realistically, I have
to wonder: life support must be expensive, and I can't imagine that insurance
would cover the cost once baby has been delivered. And I imagine most
families would not be able to cover the cost privately. Since most insurance
companies won't cover even the cost of an electric breast pump, sadly I can't
imagine they would cover life support so a baby could have breastmilk. It would
seem that this would be a suitable situation to try to get the insurance
companies enlightened about the use of banked milk. Surely, the cost of banked milk
would be much less than the cost of life support.
If only breastmilk and breastfeeding were more highly valued by
society in general.
