Get ready for your NPR-listening moms (that's National Public Radio here in
the US) to ask you about toxins in breastmilk. This week's show has a
ten-minute +/- segment from 1996, a Maine mother's musings about the
importance of taking good care of the planet as she learns about toxins in
breastmilk. The segment is quite lovely - she talks about nuzzling the
baby's head as she nurses in bed in the middle of the night.
The "update" afterwards didn't have all those lovely little touches,
however. The host says, "the age-old choice between breastmilk and formula"
and the expert toxicologist (from a US govt agency) notes that formula is
the second best choice for a mom who decides not to feed her own breastmilk.

I love this show and I thought they did a decent job of it. I just hope it
doesn't bring on lots of questions and discussions about how toxic
breastmilk is! (They do note that all milk is affected. And if we're going
to talk about hormone disruptors - which they did - I suppose we'd better be
talking about all those plastic bottles the formula is in......)
