Hi, Nancy and Jan:

The 80,000 calories comes from one of Garcia's articles when he was doing
his research on the growth curves of breast vs. bottle babies. Can't
remember which article though.
Some of my thoughts on this topic. Bottlefeeding is defensive feeding
behavior - the baby periodically flattens the nipple against his palate in
an attempt to slow down and control the milk flow, thus the "chewing" type
of suck bottle babies develop. He does not control the feeding, the feeder
does. He also does not initiate the feeding, the feeder does.
Whereas in breastfeeding, the baby initiates and controls the feeding. I
find myself constantly telling both moms and staff that you cannot force
feed a breast baby, but you can force feed a bottle baby. Maybe, this is
why NICU staff so much prefer the bottle?
