The "Breastfeeding Answer Book", page 345 states that "A well-nourished
mother should have no difficult providing for both the unborn baby and the
nursing child, *if he is more than a year old*" {emphasis mine} There is no
reference specifically for this statement although it makes sense to me
considering that breastmilk still provides primary nutrition for many babies
under a year old and that many mothers will experience a reduction in milk
supply when nursing through a subsequent pregnancy. If mother's milk supply
is lowered and baby is or should be getting most of his nutrition from
mother's milk, it stands to reason that mother needs to pay close attention
to the current baby's intake. I know that there are many mothers who nurse
through pregnancy and beyond, but when the current nursling is still an
infant himself, greater care needs to be paid to his nutrition.
