Dr. Newman's APNO calls for mupirocin, and a mother has been rx'd this ointment (just the mupirocin) for ongoing sore, dry and cracked nipples. She was instructed to wash it off before every nursing, which I suspect may be prolonging the dryness....

But I am confused by this info on mupirocin on LactMed:

>>>Ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas of skin that have been treated. Only water-miscible cream or gel products should be applied to the breast because ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking.[2] Mupirocin applied topically to the nipples appears to be relatively ineffective as a treatment for sore, cracked nipple.<<<

Is this just an example of non-savvy info related to breastfeeding?

Thanks,
Sue
