Dear all:

Ruth Lawrence reference a New York State perinatal regulation in my now very old edition of her book that states ONLY the mother and the baby's doctor can decide to use formula -- no one else.  So this means, nurses should not be giving formula without the mother or the pediatrician's permission.  Has the mother of this baby asked for the pediatrician to intervene with this nurse?  I don't know about other states, but when parents took my prenatal class, I always recommended that they politely seek a second opinion from the baby's doctor if they felt someone was recommending (or pushing) formula when they did not feel it was warranted.  Since I don't work in a hospital, I cannot speak to the politics of having to deal with coworkers that don't realize that it is completely appropriate to wait and see until the baby does really exhibit signs of needing formula.
