In response to Ann Perry's post on using a nipple shield to help a mother
with large nipples. I have used them for this a few times myself. One of the
first was a very premature infant, with a mother with very large nipples. The
infant went from a small shield to a large shield then to the breast. She fed
pretty well even though the size was small. The shape of the tip is seems to
dissolve, once the baby gets it far enough into the mouth and the whole
shield helps the baby maintain the grasp of the nipple and areola. Moving up
in size helped push the posterior tongue and jaw a little more, and then
finally we were aboe to progress to the nipple itself. I think it took two
months from start to finish, so I guess about a month with each size. The
mother was so grateful, and after a while of just breastfeeding, she called
to say she wouldn't have thought it possible, and thanks for my continued
help and encouragement.
