I received a call from the local hospital nursery tonite asking about
"discolored" colostrum. It is described as "coffee with milk added" type
of color. The only history I got was full-term baby about 24 hrs prior
who was sent to tertiary care center after meconium aspiration. Don't
think Mom has any med. problems nor taking any meds. This was the first
pumping. The second time was a little more normal (on the yellowish
side). Haven't had this question before. Who can help me? Unless I get
some other history of medical problem, breast problem on the Mom, I'm
assuming this is probably within the range of normal. The nurses did not
think this looked like blood mixed with colostrum. For now, I said I
thought it was ok to send to the neonatal nursery and let them decide if
they thought there was a problem.
