RE:Elizabeth Puzar's client with huge milk supply, I agree that the retained
placental fragment possibility be looked at closely. I did want to mention a
client of mine who had a barely adequate milk supply which hardly increased
at all in response to all the usual recommendations. I questioned her about
unusual bleeding or uterine discomfort and all seemed normal. This Mom had a
huge hemorrhage at about 5 weeks post-partum. Suddent onset in the middle of
the night. A real nightmare scenario. She bled so much her doctor told her
they almost had to do a hysterectomy to save her life (no doubt he was the
same one who left in the fragment in the first place so maybe he felt like
he needed to seem like a hero).. Maintaining her milk supply went by the
wayside during hospitalization. She is a really sweet person. I felt so bad
for her
Anyway, there was a happy ending with her next baby 2 yrs later. This
little girl was born 5 weeks early. Mom came back to see me when baby was 2
wks old because doc had her giving bottle of formula after every feeding
"because premature babies are too weak to get what they need at the breast".
Mom was worried baby would start to lose interest in BF. I could see this
baby was a real BF champ. Mom weaned off formula supplement in a couple of
days. She told me, "I could tell she was content" (yeah for mom's
intuition). Baby went from gaining at rate of barely 1/2 oz /day to well
over 1 oz / day on mom's milk alone. BF still going strong even with Mom
back at work full time.
