"Just a question about this from a person inexperienced in pumps...At one
of
our WIC meetings a Medela Rep talked about pumps and cycles per minute or
something like that. Do all hospital grade pumps have the same cycles per
minute and do people need to be aware of this when choosing a pump and
comparing effectiveness?"

There is an excellent table in the 2nd edition of Riordan and Auerbach's
"Breastfeeding and Human Lactation"on page 414 and 415 that provides
"Selected Technical Data Regarding Pumps". The data in the table shows
that the Medela Classic and the Ameda Egnell hospital grade pumps are very
close-46 and 48 cycles per minute respectively.

I think consumers need to be aware of what they are buying. They need to
know what to expect from a Manual, Battery, and/or Electric Pump. If we
are selling or renting pumps, then they need to know what is going to best
meet their needs (and their pocketbooks) and their personal breastfeeding
goals.
