I am not a researcher, but will comment on the use of test weighing in my
hospital based practice, mostly with outpts.  I have found it very useful
for determining the intake of the particular feeding I am observing.
I've been surprised several times.  Some babies will appear to be sucking
and swallowing, then be found to have taken in only 5-8 cc over 15 min.
Some babies almost 'stealth swallow' and take in 30cc or more in a short
time.
   Before I used the scale, I thought my swallowing/intake assessment
skills were fair to good, but the scale tells the facts.  As Jack Newman
says, we need to be careful about the baby who is 'pretending to
breastfeed'.

    Test weights have also confirmed that a baby is getting an adequate
amount of milk  (30-60cc one breast)  while using a nipple shield.
