Wow, Josefine! Excellent - my hat is off to you! I don't have any
information that would help you, just words of encouragement for the
project, and a reminder that WIC offers a food package for "homeless"
families. Also, if your clients are on WIC, they will be eligible for the
services of the local WIC BF Coordinator. I worked with women in the local
shelter, and even with women in the county jail, when I was in that
capacity.

One thing I did, inspired by my first client who had no place to go with her
baby during the day, was develop a list of downtown places where she could
go to nurse comfortably - the staple of which was the public library.

And of course you can take advantage of pointing out how very important
BFing is to these babies in particular - these are truly situations where
many of the things about formula feeding pose a particular hazard (even
above the usual): spotty sanitation, difficulty keeping bottles & all the
stuff you need for mixing, measuring, & administering formula clean,
exposure to many more people and their various illnesses than most babies
face, and of course lack of adequate refrigeration/cooking facilities. These
are sure babies that need every last drop of protection! When I first
brought this up in a meeting of public health nurses, they laughed at me,
thinking I was joking, but I kept at it and they came around to realize
that, when hygeine is in question, BF is the way to go! NOT even to mention
the reduced medical costs for these children...

These women really do have a very, very hard time of it, esp. when they're
not allowed to stay in their shelters during the day. You may be able to
work with the shelter managers to reach an exception to the rule for women
with young babies - I managed to do that as well.
