Tell the mom if her doctors feel that if her heart defect is bad enough for
them to reccommend ATB before dental work that she should take it, BY ALL
MEANS!!!! Her baby may be fussy with the ATB but a fussy baby is better than
a a mommy with heart failure, in the ICU, or with a stroke or worse yet
-----dead. If that is scary it is meant to be, It doesn't happen often but
the risk benefit ratio is such that a bad outcome is not likely but it can be
very, very bad if it does happen. She could try to pump ahead and save milk
to give the infant when she takes the ATB, or try to structure the timing of
the medicine around the nursing times when the milk exposure is less. She
also could ask the doctor for a different medicine to try other than
amoxicillin since it seemed to disagree with the baby. There are other
protocols of different meds to take, The American Heart Associattion has
these available or they are in a common antibiotic treatment guide written by
J.P. Sanford.
