OB in the 60's. Memories. In the hospitals where I worked and had my
babies, one gave caudals and nitrous oxide, caudals and saddleblocks,
pentrane and nitrous oxide. Most babies were delivered with forceps (low
and mid) and vacuum extractor. I had saddleblock with first in DR (what a
waste). Baby delivered with forceps. With second had no anesthesia. Both
babies breastfed beautifully, but babies were topped off with formula in
hospital.
I wish I had been more aware of the breastfeeding babes. I guess back then
if a mother had problems the mother was given no assistance and baby was
given formula.
I thank God that I had no problems with breastfeeding. I trusted my
daughter and son and myself and my body to function as God made them. How
much of the problems we are seeing with breastfeeding, epidurals, pitocin
induction are related to trust of ourselves, our babies and our bodies? And
the lack of trust of a woman's body by the medical doctors? How can this
faith be reinstilled into the women of today?
