As a mother of twins, and a La Leche Leader who leads a twins group. My
supspisions are in the area of one of two or possiably both problems. I
would suspect that theses babies may have a high pallet. Even if you don't
feel it is pronouncably so, this can greatly impact their behavior at the
breast. ( The soreness and seeming unabilty to identify the breast from time
to time is what leads me to this.)
The other issues are twins issues. If these babies were fed seperately at
most feeds the problems may be less of a problem. Experience tells me that
each baby at least in the inital first weeks needs signifcant time one on
one with mom. One would never deniy that issue if she had singeltons. Lot of
skin contact and a good assessment at several feeds to determine if there is
a pattern to this behavior. Like if has it been 3 hours since this baby fed
well, it may be an issue of this baby being so upset it can't settle well
enough to feed at the breast. But the baby will finger feed, that is a clue
right there. Baby needs to get to the breast more frequently. If this isn't
possiable, mom isn't able to handle anymore, then just assure her to keep
doing what she is doing. there is no danger in just waiting , ( with current
weight gains),babies will figure it all out as long as she keeps a decent
supply. Dee Keith, IBCLC, LLL
