I just received a call from a friend.  Her 4 month old granddaughter has very
slightly enlarged breasts and also has developed a small amount of blonde
pubic hair.  This is a change from before (I know enlarged breasts are common
in both sexes at birth).

The pediatrician has panicked and told her it is probably caused by the
maternal hormones being passed through the breastmilk, and (of course) stop
breastfeeding immediately.

Mom (and grandma) are a bit nervous to say the least.  I told them I would
ask y'all for some input.  Since this type of development is related to
estrogens & progesterone, both of which are suppressed during lactation, then
how on earth does anyone suspect "maternal hormones passed through the milk?"
 No, she isn't on oral contraceptives -- I asked.

Am I correct in assuming that we are once again sacrificing breastfeeding on
the altar of ignorance?  Is there precedence for this?  (If it IS maternal
hormones then it's innocuous -- if it isn't, I don't like to think of the
possible alternatives, but at least she can continue breastfeeding -- which
she could anyway).
