Volufeeders are used not just to feed from but also to mix and measure
milk for very sick babies who are being gavaged as well as when any
fortifiers are being added to EBM. Even if an infant was cup fed the
amount may need to be measured in something and, in my NICU, everything
is measured in volufeeders. When I use an SNS at the breast or to
fingerfeed I attach a volufd. to it. If a baby is sick and up on our
peds floor, they also use the same techniques. It's everywhere. That's
why I am so concerned about whether or not they are sterile.
