If there is research showing a relationship between circumcision as it is practiced in US hospitals and breastfeeding problems, that will definitely be on topic for Lactnet. If not, simply having an opinion on whose rights should weigh most heavily in the decision to have a boy circumcised is actually not on topic for Lactnet. That is *not* to say it is a non-issue - but it is a non-topic here.
This is an issue about which people seem to feel even more strongly (and emotionally invested) than about breastfeeding itself. Since it concerns religious beliefs as well, evidence-based arguments opposing the practice are unlikely to win new devotees, as it were, and those whose decisions about circumcision are based on evidence will already have made up their minds.
We have subscribers from countries where most boys are circumcised in infancy almost automatically, and we have subscribers from countries where it has been suggested the practice of circumcision of minors without medical indication should be banned by law and treated as child abuse. We have subscribers who practice ritual circumcision for religious reasons and we have those who campaign against it with equal fervor. Because the topic has a huge potential to reduce the list to a heated discussion about which group is on the One True Path, a discussion that can never be resolved here, circumcision in itself is deemed off topic and we have agreed to keep our disagreements on the topic off this list.
Nonetheless, there must be a way to mention that a child in pain from a recent operative intervention on a sensitive body part, will need to have that taken into consideration when positioning him for feeding, without offending subscribers who practice male infant circumcision. It is only a very few decades since anesthesiologists began using analgesics instead of just curare for major surgery on critically ill newborns, because everyone thought they couldn't feel pain. We know otherwise now, and the knowledge is part of the equation for every other kind of intervention and procedure babies are subject to; circumcision can be no exception.
For all I know there are lists whose sole purpose is to argue about circumcision. This list is not one of them.
If you feel the need to vent about how Lactnet deals with circumcision (or doesn't!) or how any other subscriber behaves, or any other off topic issue, PLEASE make use of the listmothers, whom you can reach at [log in to unmask]
