I am looking for information for a mom who is exclusively nursing her 1 year
old. The child has no health concerns. The pediatrician told mom she
should is not getting enough nutrition from breastmilk alone. Mom has had
the baby to an OT who told her... NOW BRACE YOURSELVES...
that she should introduce a bottle because the breastfeeding was not
providing the oral stimulation for development.
I asked mom what she thought of that and she said that she did not really
think the OT was a strong supporter of breastfeeding.
Mom just really wants some help with getting her baby to eat solids as the
baby seems interested but she gags or spits out everything when fed. When
the baby was a newborn this mother had problems initially with sore nipples.
We talked then about the frenulum being tight but with positioning changes
the baby nursed beautifully and mom healed well.
